NEWS: How the hospitality industry has changed in the digital era

If you cast your mind back to a time before the internet, what does the hospitality industry look like? This is a time before you can read up on your favourite food blogs about the latest restaurant opening or could quickly search for a hotel to stay in. In fact, the hospitality industry has adapted to the digital era so seamlessly that it can be difficult to think what changes have been brought about. By examining each of the main sectors in the industry, here’s a brief overview of the important developments that have affected us all:

Restaurants

As a food blog, this is the number one priority for us at TheFoodaholic! We would encourage people to read our restaurant reviews or peruse Instagram to see what everybody else is enjoying before deciding on a place to eat. The digital era means we’re all sharing information much more readily – and if that translates into only going to the best restaurants and enjoying the most delicious food, then it’s alright by us!

Casinos

If we were to believe James Bond films, we’d still think that a visit to a casino necessitated dressing in your finest designer clothes and jewellery. You’d also probably be playing against a villain. The reality is, however, that more and more of us are taking advantage of the prevalence of online casinos and enjoying our favourite games from the comfort of our own home. This way, whilst we’re enjoying a game on Betway, for instance, we can also nibble on our own home cooked delicacies!

Hotels

As the travel industry has gradually moved to the internet, the facilities it is able to offer customers through more reviews and photographs has helped to maximise the pleasure people can get whilst travelling. This means that when it comes to booking a hotel, we’re able to take advantage of last minute deals safe in the knowledge that many before us have enjoyed staying there.

Tourism

Remember the days when you would book your holiday based on the small square image of a travel brochure on the high street? Nowadays we’re so busy spending our time saving images of the places we want to visit on our Pinterest pages we’ve grown accustomed to being given a wealth of information about the places we’re going to visit. Similarly, we’re becoming more adventurous when choosing our holiday destinations. More and more of us are opting to backpack across South America or South-East Asia after seeing how beautiful these places are instead of booking the same package holiday every year.
