Situated right off Kensington High Street and taking over the site an old-school Italian I actually used to frequent, Zuaya is Kensington’s newest addition and it’s a fabulous one. Zuaya is an exotic Latin American restaurant which is the perfect excuse to indulge over cocktails or be taken on an exciting culinary journey around Latin America. Brazilian, Peruvian, Mexican – expect to have your tastebuds tingling!

Inside it’s absolutely gorgeous. Glamorous, sophisticated, exciting and the closest thing you’ll come to a tropical rainforest in London – except with cocktails and exceptional service. Upstairs the mirrored wall makes it look much bigger than it is, but the bar is ready made for Instagram. Downstairs it’s airy, just as pretty and the perfect place to enjoy a good night out.
To kick off our meal and in usual fashion, we tucked into a couple of cocktails. A deliciously prepared Perfect Manhattan and a my favourite, Zuaya’s signature cocktail – London to Lima. A heavenly concoction of pisco, falernum, lime, agave syrup and egg whites.
One dish I really loved and one of the very first was the raspberry gazpacho with feta & pistachio. Fresh, vibrant, sweet and incredibly mouth. I love a dish which gives me flashbacks to a holiday and this did just that. Also lovely was the little Brazilian cheese breads. I’m not sure they were my favourite part of the meal, but still very enjoyable alongside a cocktail.
The most surprising dish for me was the seabass ceviche with wild berries. Presentation wise it wasn’t what I expected, with that bright yellow sauce and fruit, but guess what? It was delicious. The seabass was fresh, the fruity yellow sauce was zesty and sweet and the berries added a lovely touch of texture and extra sweetness to it all.
My absolute favourite dish from our entire meal were these lamb tacos. In short – they were absolutely stunning. The soft tacos themselves were superb and didn’t fall to pieces (plus I loved the colour). The soft lamb meat was as juicy as could ever be and the flavour in the meat was rich and intense. A lovely dish which should easily become their signature.
Another very exciting dish was the wild rice with shitake mushroom and confit duck – topped with a fried egg. The smell of this dish when it arrived at the table was absolutely incredible, so fragrant and so rich. Taste wise, it was even better than it smelt. The rice was juicy and well cooked, the duck was quickly flaking at the sight of my fork and the mushrooms added a welcomed earthiness to it all. Don’t leave without trying this.
The one dish that didn’t quite hit the mark was the grilled octopus with baked sweet potatoes. Visually, it looked delicious and flavour wise it was spot, but the grilled octopus was just too overcooked and chewy. If they got that cooking right with this, so it melts in the mouth – then it could be a really lovely dish.
To finish, the most delicious passion fruit creme brûlée which was as flavoursome as it was colourful. But star dessert was the dulche de leche and coconut flan. It was essentially a creme caramel, something I don’t actually usually enjoy all that much – but this was hands down one of the best examples I’ve ever had. It looked a bit like it was melting on the plate, but the texture and flavour of it was divine. As I sit here on the sofa writing this, I’m craving both of these desserts again.
I really loved Zuaya and what I loved most is that the whole dining experience felt unique amongst the restaurants in the area which can sometimes be very Italian heavy. Inside it also looked like something out of a design magazine. The cocktails are worth coming here alone for, the service is impeccable and the food is not only delicious – but interesting and exciting. Plus they’ve got a nice outdoor terrace to enjoy the Autumn sun. Would we come back if in the area? I think we definitely would!
Oh I love the interiors! The food sounds really great too!
