A Europe Travel Guide – Get an Idea before You Visit

While Europe is home to some of the most amazing destination sure to be on every travel junkie’s bucket-list, there are some things that you should know before your first ever visit to Europe. Reading all those travel guides may give you the impression that planning a trip to any country or city in Europe is simply too tedious but that isn’t so. It’s just better to be prepared so you can have a great and fun trip. Also, I understand that to someone living on the other side of the world, a flight ticket to any European destination will feel quite pricey so it’s best to head over to some good flights booking sites and perhaps compare ticket prices to save some money there.

As a person living in Europe

I live in London and have seen my fair share of tourist visiting to marvel at this historically rich city. However, I also see those tourists who were clearly not ready for some things that they had to deal with in European destinations. I’m not saying that every place in Europe has the same lifestyle or culture but there are some things that all of them have in similar.

Proper documentation

Every place has their own requirements for documents so they can issue a visa. So you should check online for their embassy and see if you have everything in order. Also, a passport is a must for every traveler unless you aren’t going out of your country. If you have a valid passport then its fine but if you need to get a new one or renew your older one then submit your application with time. Usually, it takes around four to six weeks for a new passport so plan accordingly. Lastly, some countries require you to get certain vaccinations and other medical documents, so visit your doctor to get the required certificates.

Make a proper budget

Changing currencies can either go in your favor or sometimes it can make average things seem really pricey to you. If you have a destination in mind, then make up your budget by keeping the exchange rate in mind. Personally, when I’m about to travel somewhere new I check out those handy tips and travel stories along with general online stores of that place to get an idea of how much things cost. If it’s too pricey then decide on any two to three major attractions otherwise stick to cheaper ones or those free ones. For food, I always prefer those older restaurants that have been there for a long time rather than those high-end ones to save money.

Make all the proper bookings

Along with booking suitable flight tickets, you should also book your accommodation. Of course, you can change it later on but it’s always to have a fail-safe booking in place

Pro tip: Don’t just stick to hotels. Most places offer hostels or Airbnbs which are much cheaper than hotels. It never hurts to be open to multiple options.

Decide on what you would do there

Creating a rough itinerary is always a good idea and helps you with packing, budget as well as time management. If it’s your first ever time visiting that place then don’t hesitate to check out travel blogs and those articles talking about the top attractions in that place. Look up other people’s itinerary and make one for yourself. I’m not saying you should stick to it without doing anything extra but a planned route will save your time and money. Otherwise, what’s traveling without exploring?

Pro tip: if you’re a seasoned shopper then pack lightly and take an extra empty bag along so you can bring back your new things easily.

Manage time-zone

When you travel to a whole different continent, different time-zone can be your worst enemy. For me, I go into my vampire mode and find myself awake at night while I’m snoozing as soon as the sun rises. To combat that, you can try to ease yourself in the new schedule a little before your flight date. Also, take along those comfy neck cushion so you can catch some shut-eye on the plane. Otherwise, you can be sure that simply the excitement of visiting a new place will keep you awake.

Money problems

Most European destinations have ATMs so I suggest you consult with your bank and make sure your credit or debit card will work in whichever place you’ve chosen. Also, I think it’s best to coordinate with someone in your home city, a friend or relative, that in case of emergency they can send you some cash from a money exchange. Also, make sure to ask your bank about ATM fees. Paying extra fees isn’t fun so if there’s a way to avoid it or if you should use the ATM of a specific bank, make sure you have all the necessary details.

Pro tip: Always pay in the local currency wherever you visit. Not only can you sometimes save money but it’s less fussy. The exchange rates change constantly so local currency will at least go easier on your wallet.

Let your phone be more helpful

Download useful apps like Google Maps and Google translate to help you along in your travels. Also, check if the destination you’ve chosen has a reliable public transit system. If they do hen get their app because using public transit is much cheaper than taxis who are notorious for giving needless city tours to unsuspecting tourists, charging an insane amount of money. While I’m talking about your phone, check with your network provider and get a suitable phone plan so you can stay connected with your loved ones.

Get insured

If you’re into traveling then a good travel insurance is a must. And if you’re visiting a whole new continent then do not skip on this. Not only can it save you if you’re in a pinch but it can make your whole journey much safer.

Valid tickets

In Europe, it’s very important to have a receipt for your bus or train ticket. And if you rent a car there then keep your parking tickets on you as well. In case it’s needed you can easily show the proof of validation. On that note, when you go shopping, keep your receipts safe as well. There are cases of shoplifting everywhere so it’s wise to have your receipts handy to avoid needless trouble.
