Devonshire Terrace Restaurant Review: British Classics Served Al Fresco in the City

When it comes to restaurant groups or chains, I’m not gonna to lie but they really don’t appeal to me unless it’s the only or last option. I’m not quiet sure what it is, but I think it has something to do with the lack of an element of surprise. You know what to expect and the food fills you up well enough – though nothing really jumps out. But that’s not the case with Drake & Morgan and their latest restaurant Devonshire Terrace, because we were consistently surprised by the quality.

Nestled within the heart of Devonshire Square just moments from Liverpool Street Station, Devonshire Terrace is your everyday escape from the hustle and bustle of City life with a fabulous glass dome roof terrace, gorgeous inside restaurant and a further second terrace on the outer side which is where we sat, taking in the last of the Summer warmth as the sun started to set.

As for the menu, it’s very simple, but having visited three Drake & Morgan restaurants now (whom all have different names and themes), we’re yet to have a bad meal in one and the prices are very attractive given the quality which arrives on the plate. We started with the prawn lollipops which were as good as I remembered, nice and plump and wrapped in a golden batter for dunking into the sweet chilli sauce. The chicken wings with a maple, ale & chilli glaze were nice enough, they just needed a little more sauce and perhaps a few minutes extra cooking to give that chicken skin a nice crunch.

For mains we loved the roast lamb rump, which again priced at £13.95 it was even more of a bargain. Good quality lamb, creamy mash potato, a garnish of samphire and a cherry tomato, shallot & currant salsa. A very satisfying dish which went even better with a side of tenderstem broccoli.

Better still was the 8oz sirloin steak priced at £16.95 which was an absolute steal, especially as it included a good portion of chips and a watercress garnish. The meat was soft and tender, full of flavour and had a nice streak of smokiness running through it. To enjoy your steak even more, order a side of onion rings and creamy blue cheese sauce. You won’t regret it.

We didn’t quite have any room left for dessert, but just enough space for a couple of liquid desserts in the form of two after dinner martini cocktails. One mimicking the flavours of an After Eight and the other of creme brûlée. Both were very well executed, tasted exactly like their dessert forms and if I had the choice I’d finish dinner on a sweet cocktail from here on in.

Once again we had a really lovely dinner in one of Drake & Morgans fine establishments and whilst it won’t be winning awards for imaginative or avant-garde dining, Devonshire Terrace does a fantastic job at serving simple British classics at affordable prices in a lovely setting. If you’re looking for an informal meal over a few too many drinks and a little fun then don’t hesitate booking because you’ll have a great time.

NB: Our meal was complimentary. All views are as always, my own. My views are not influenced by anyone other than my own palate and slightly poor eyesight.

Sounds like a good, decent chain – sometimes all you wanted is a guaranteed tasty feed, isn’t it, rather than bells and whistles.
