My second visit to Ben’s Canteen in Clapham EVER and this certainly won’t be the last. An array of crispy deep-fried goodness, officially THE best deep-fried buttermilk chicken burger in London and desserts worth a Deliveroo. Ben’s is also the perfect place for those office Christmas parties. Good music, fun staff and food which everyone will enjoy (except perhaps vegetarians).
If that sounds good to you then Ben’s Canteen are offering some very tempting offers this year starting at just £25pp and include….Bottomless bubbles. The secret code word to my heart. Expect free-flowing bubbles for two hours and lots of delicious dishes.
We started our festive evening here with some lovely Karma Cola croquettes. Each of these gargantuan croquettes were wrapped in a crispy golden outer crumb, creamy centre which was very well-seasoned and some good chunks of ham. Even better still once dipped into the glossy Karma Cola BBQ sauce and washed down with a glass of that free-flowing Prosecco. Bliss.
Of course the main spectacle was the gigantic Xmas turkey burger. I can’t recall a time I’ve ever eaten such a mammoth sized burger, nor rammed with so may flavours and ingredients.
Packed inside this glazed bun was a sage brined & buttermilked turkey breast, Karma cola braised ham, squashed stuffing ball, brie, bacon & chestnut mayo, mulled wine & cranberry sauce and some buttered brussel tops. A rather epic burger which.
One part of this meal I fell completely in love with was this basket filled with just about everything Christmas. Heavenly crispy duck fat roasted potatoes, Brussel sprouts, crispy bacon, spiced red cabbage and some devilishly good sausage & sage stuffing. The whole thing was then given a drizzle of Ben’s red wine gravy, which I ended up after dipping my burger into – filthy (good) I know. If Ben’s ever start serving unlimited bubbles and roast potatoes – I’m booking.
We finished up on some gorgeous mini doughnuts and yes – the whole board was for one person. When Ben’s do portions, they do them well. Fluffy, sugary, warm – perfection.
Three syringes were served alongside ready to get stuck into these DIY doughnuts and each had a different filling – orange, brandy cream and mincemeat. Simply pick you poison, inject and eat! My favourite was the mincemeat.
I had a really lovely evening at Ben’s Canteen and once again I was pleasantly surprised. Yes this restaurant may be all about burgers and everything deep-fried, but each time they come up with something so unique and in this case very relevant to the time of year. Ben, I shouldn’t have left it so long from my last visit and I won’t make that mistake again. We’ll see you very, very soon – and so will those Xmas party bookings.
NB: My meal was complimentary. All views are as always, my own. My views are not influenced by anyone other than my own palate and slightly poor eyesight.
It looks like it is worth going here just for those Karma Cola croquettes, they looks so moreish!
