Meat the Master: Trying ‘The World’s Best Steak’ at the World’s End Market in Chelsea

The World’s Best Steak? It’s a bold statement and one you don’t hear very often. I was a little sceptical about such a statement if I’m completely honest, so finding out it’s being served at my local The World’s End Market in Chelsea – I simply couldn’t resist. I’ve seen this site in many different guises over the years and from what I could tell, its current form will be staying for good, packed full with not just diners – but people sipping cocktails at the bar and on the outdoor terrace.

The meat itself has a nice story and comes from a gentleman named Jose Gordon. Back home in Spain where this beef comes from, Jose dry-ages his meat individually to ensure succulence and flavour, while also running his hugely successful restaurant, El Capricho which is just outside Leon. Thankfully we don’t have to travel all the way to Spain and can sample it right here in London. Kicking off our meaty set menu was this gorgeous steak tartare, using premium Ox meat and muddle together with some lovely herbs and spices. I actually couldn’t fault it.

The carpaccio from entrecote was an unusual one for me. Bits of it were absolutely stunning, but sometimes a little too much sinewy fat got in the way and made it feel like quite an effort to eat. The flavour couldn’t be faulted. A deep meaty richness and the pinch of salt and olive oil drizzled over the top was lovely. Matured for 180 long days is what gives this entrecote such a distinct flavour.

Best part of the meal and showing off exactly why this meat is so highly regarded was the slices of Vacio De Buey –  aka premium ox flank steak. I’m not sure I’d agree with a statement so bold as to it being the best steak I’ve ever eaten, but it was certainly very good with both texture and flavour. A generous portion too. If you like your steak strong then you’ll love it, taking on a pungent farmyard flavour from its maturation and age. The side of chips is a must too, covered in truffle oil and Parmesan.

While not considered part of this meaty showcase, desserts were a much welcomed end to our meal and were actually rather excellent. A panna cotta of dreams which my dining companion referred to as the best they had ever tasted, ironic given we were supposed to make that remark on the meat and not the desserts. I was refused even a spoonful. Just as good was the chocolate fondant. Warm, rich and oozing silky chocolate sauce from the middle.

Visiting The World’s End Market was a lovely mid-week treat for us and it was nice to be back at my local and see it thriving. I think a statement referring to something as “the best in the world” before you’ve tried it, is never going to quite live up to expectations – however there was no denying that these special steaks they serve here are excellent. Packed with flavour, texture and surprisingly good value. If you’re looking for a relaxed neighbourhood eatery then The World’s End Market is a lovely choice.

NB: I was invited to review and my meal was complimentary. All views are as always, my own. My views are not influenced by anyone other than my own palate and slightly poor eyesight.
