TheHotelaholic – REVIEW: Fishmore Hall Hotel, Ludlow, Shropshire

Fishmore Hall Hotel

The Hotel

Fishmore Hall Hotel is a privately owned boutique country house hotel situated on the outskirts of Ludlow centre and looking proudly over its historic, picturesque village. The hotel building was beautifully restored back in 2007 by its owners, who have very sympathetically renovated the houses rich Georgian heritage. Ludlow sits in the county of Shropshire and is best known for its abundance of local food, excellent produce, high quality restaurants and one of the UK’s best food festivals – The Ludlow Food Festival (not to mention the huge variety of locally brewed beers & ciders). The hotel is also one of the few dog friendly hotels in the area and a perfect retreat to let the canine part of the family run wild in the lush green surroundings.

The Rooms

We stayed in the Fishmore Hall Hotel Executive Double Room (pictured below), which has a stunning window at its feature that opens up on floor level – perfect for perching against with a good book, looking out over the rolling hills and taking in the sounds of those not so quiet cows. The room was equipped with a very large double bed, flat screen TV, plush carpets and a two-seater area for writing or relaxing, along with a fresh grinding coffee machine. For me the bathroom was the real highlight – it was very modern and came with a huge bath (almost big enough for swimming) and large walk-in shower. As well as fluffy bathrobes, slippers and a selection of luxury toiletries from Molton Brown. The mini bar here was also fantastic, filled with local beers, ales, cider and produce. Complimentary wireless Internet access was fast and covered most of the hotel but struggled a little in the main dining room (probably the place you’d least need it anyway).

The Spa/Gym/Health & Fitness

The spa occupies a separate shed area just outside the back of the building, looking out over the rolling hills. I didn’t experience any of the treatments myself, but I’m assured you’d be in safe hands. There is no gym or health fitness facilitates on site.

The Food

The restaurant here at Fishmore Hall Hotel is located on the ground floor of the hotel where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served. The breakfast includes a fantastic continental selection, with croissants, pastries, fresh fruit and cereals. There is also a hot offering which can be ordered off the menu and has some rather delicious sounding entries – the classic full English however shouldn’t be missed. During lunch and dinner the restaurant is looked after by head chef, Andrew Birch. Andrew previously worked for Michelin starred Montagu Arms in Hampshire and you can tell – the food here at Fishmore Hall Hotel is absolutely stunning. You can read all about my experience HERETip – head to the bar or lounge first and sip on a few of the hotels cocktails on offer.

The Verdict

I had an excellent stay here at Fishmore Hall Hotel. The restaurant is certainly the hotels highlight and will no doubt attract lots of new clientèle once word spreads. The hotel is especially suitable for those looking to simply get away from it all and relax, or even for its close proximity to Ludlow town centre. In terms of improvements, the hotel could benefit from a more attractive bar area to improve the overall dining experience and during a quite evening some background music to help the mood. As for the rooms I couldn’t find fault, it’s exactly what I wanted from my nights stay here and was incredibly relaxing and tranquil. Would I stay here again? Yes, without a doubt.
