The Hotel
Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa is a 4-Star family owned hotel set in the gorgeous village of Thornton Hough, which is believed to date back to the mid-1800’s. It was then once home to the Bamford Brothers, who were wealthy shipping merchants and since 1954 it was transformed into a hotel, with many of its original features still intact to this day. The area of Wirral is located very close to the centre of Liverpool so providing you have arrived by car it’s a fantastic tranquil place to use as a base for exploring. The hotel also is home to an award winning spa which is open to both hotel guest and paying members.
The Rooms
We stayed in the Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa Executive Garden Room (pictured below), which is located in an outbuilding attached to the side of the property. Each has their own balcony/terrace, which looks out over the stunning, immaculately kept grounds. The room was equipped with a king size bed (I believe), flat screen TV and integrate bath/shower with waterproof TV for relaxing. As well as bathrobes, slippers and a good quality selection of complimentary toiletries. These rooms have been recently renovated although some areas still need updating such as the ceiling and wooden furniture. There is no mini bar but room service is available. Complimentary wireless Internet access is described as fast speed but our room struggled to keep a stable connection. In the main hotel however the signal is very strong. Other rooms such as the Executive Boutique Rooms (picture below) look to be very plush indeed and are perhaps worth paying that extra to provide your stay with that added little luxury.
The Spa/Gym/Health & Fitness
The spa occupies a separate building next to the hotel. Inside you can expect to find a heated pool, a thermal zone – which includes, sauna, steam room, snow cave (freezing!) and both indoor and outdoor heated thermal tubs. It is a lovely spa experience which also offers signature facial and body treatments – the rasul mud rub is certainly an experience worth divulging in. The spa here is also owner of the prestigious, World Luxury Spa Awards, for 3 years running. Popular at both this hotel and spa are weddings, so for those in need of extra pampering the on–site make up studio could be very useful. As well as a salon and fully equipped gym. For those looking for complete relaxation, grab a glass of bubbly and relax in the hot, bubbly thermal pool – you won’t be disappointed.
The Food & Drink
The Lawns Restaurant is the hotel’s restaurant and is located on the ground floor of the hotel where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served. The breakfast includes both a continental selection, such as croissants, selection of pastries, cheeses and cold meats. There is also a hot selection which includes items such as bacon, sausages, eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes. The main restaurant has recently appointed new chef Matt Worswick, who comes from a Michelin star background and is causing quite a stir here in Wirral. Dinner was a truly memorable experience and you can read all about HERE over at TheFoodaholic. Cocktails in the bar are a must too, before and after dinner – of course.
The Verdict
I had a very pleasant stay here at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa in Wirral. With prices starting at just £74 for a basic room including full use of the spa, free wifi and free onsite parking this isn’t a deal to be sniffed at. The newly taken over restaurant offers some stunning food and the spa is a lovely retreat for those wanting pure relaxation. An upgrade in room type would certainly be a huge step up too, so for the disconcerting traveller it may be usefull to take advantage. Would I stay here again? Yes. At these prices Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa has lots to offer and in fact you’ll never need to leave – unless for perhaps a walk in the grounds or to visit its picturesque village, Thornton Hough.
