The question(s) on everyone’s lips around London right now, is when will the restaurant boom come crashing to a halt and is there really any more space for new openings? Personally I don’t imagine it will come to any kind of halt (at least not for a very long time) because London is still actually very much in its infancy and has lots more room to spare for unusual cuisines and eclectic fusion mixes. Sadly the one thing that’s happened while people have been so busy chasing every new opening, is their forgetting about the last. When I got invited down to Camden to check out Market restaurant, the last thing I expected to come across was quintessentially British cooking at its finest hour.
Market opened in Camden back in 2007, and at that time was praised by the top critics, with the likes of foodie goddess, Fay Maschler applauding its “Brilliantly British” food – a quote I couldn’t agree with more. The restaurant’s one downside is being situated on Parkway, squeezed in amongst the budget bargain shops – if this place was in Soho it would have queues spiralling around the corners. We dined early one mid-week evening and it was very quiet, but by the time we were leaving the place was buzzing with the room full of conversation and the smell of freshly baked bread and open bottles of wine. Bread was a solid offering, not the best we’ve ever had – but fluffy, fragrant and crunchy on the sides.
