REVIEW: Dip & Flip, Battersea Rise, Battersea

Ever heard of a French dip? And no, not the salad dressing type. It’s a much meatier, calorific affair. And it’s recently come to Clapham, under the name of Dip & Flip. An American invention (of course) which plays on the idea of serving you a hot sandwich/bun filled with an arrays of items – classically being beef slices and cheese. You’re then faced with the even tougher choice of how much you want it ‘dipped’. The dipping process involves the inside of the bun being dipped in to either one dunks worth of meat juices from the cooked beef, or double dunked for a more saturated, completely unhealthy sandwich. This is this kind of food that’s making the nation obese, so I’ll just have to jump on the wagon and get fat, because all this ‘unhealthy’ food is too good, to ignore.

The menu is short, but well-formed and doesn’t stray away too much from what the restaurant is offering. Simply gravy dunked dips, or grilled meaty burgers. There’s also a good selection of sides and what every American style restaurant would not be complete without – milkshakes. Desserts are pre-made by The Dessert Deli, apart from a few slices of American style tarts and cakes. Everything is also very competitively priced and most of it, a steal.

We decided to test our eating ability and try both the dip and flip. The ‘dip’ was a stunning, sweet glazed brioche bun, toasted on the inside and filled with tender and juicy full flavoured beef slices, along with some white cabbage slaw. I only went as far as a single dunking of gravy on my bun, and it was enough – moistening the inside and not making things too soggy. The gravy juices for extra dipping was nice, and had a delicate flavour but perhaps not quite thick enough for me – it does take a lot of effort to soak it up.

Cheesy fries were pretty standard. Simple American style fries topped with American cheese, which does have its downfalls on chips as it cools rapidly and starts to harden if not lapped up quickly. As a side they filled the void, but weren’t spectacular –  but neither do I think they need to be here.

The piece de resistance, in all its magnificent oozing glory is the beautiful item photographed above. The same sweet glossy grilled bun as the ‘dip’, and with the same juicy beef, but with the addition of a gorgeously well cooked and flavoursome meat pattie, salty crispy bacon, American cheese, sauce, and a little showing to the gravy. Is was extremely messy, and the fact that it completely ruined my inappropriate shirt for this meal, I didn’t care – it was that good. Everything I was wanting on the day I came here – this burger/French dip fulfilled. I do enjoy a Meat Liquor burger, but I enjoyed this one even more.

If you do mange to get yourself down to Battersea (but kind of Clapham) and through the doors of Dip & Flip then make sure you order the ‘Dip & Flip Burger’, hell why not add some of the thinly sliced rare lamb which is on offer as well. For the type of food they’re serving, I’m sure the Battersea (Clapham) locals love it, and will for a long time – as fast food and burgers seem to be a big hit in the area. The only problem is I’ve never quite taken to Battersea (Clapham) , but on this rare occasion and just for the burger, I’d travel – because I think I’ve developed a little crush on it.

8/10

EDIT – After some debate, the restaurant is actually in Battersea, and not Clapham – which I have reflected in the above – kind of.
